Neue Publikation: Staying in Life: Paving the Way to Dementia-Friendly Communities

Life: Paving the Way to Dementia-Friendly Communities. Berlin/Gießen, March 2017
We are constantly growing older, and there are an increasing number of elderly people living with dementia who are merely being 'taken care of'. Now, a new book shows what we can do to create spaces where one can stay in life - rather than just staying alive. Show cases and anecdotes of 78 local projects throughout Germany have been combined in this book by the authors Ms. Verena Rothe, Ms. Gabriele Kreutzer and Mr. Reimer Gronemeyer of the German dementia initiative Aktion Demenz. The English language book is out now, published by transcript Verlag.

How can we turn the individual environments of people with and without dementia into 'places of human warmth'?

This was the key question for the organizers of 78 local initiatives, supported by three editions of the Aktion Demenz e.V. funding programme ‘People in the Community Living with Dementia’, financed by the Robert Bosch Foundation. The newly published book “Staying in Life: Paving the Way to Dementia-Friendly Communities” brings together all their experiences. In this book, the three authors, intimately familiar with the topic, explore initial movements, obstacles, and first approaches.

New perspectives aside from medicine and care

Verena Rothe, manager of the programme, underlines: “We would like to express our gratitude to all those committed individuals from politics, art, churches, social and volunteer work that have been and are creatively working towards dementia-friendly communities. It is only through them that we were able to collect and combine all these different approaches to dementia.”

First Chairman of Aktion Demenz, Reimer Gronemeyer, explains: “Dementia is a challenge for society, but at the same time a chance. We ask many questions, but we also show ways how to deal with that.” Deputy Chairwoman Gabriele Kreutzner adds: “Regarding dementia, we need more books and people who shed a different light on that topic – aside from the medical and care perspective. Our book shows how civil society supports people with dementia.”
